Gwexintaba Village on the Wild Coast, South Africa.

Access to the village

The Mpondo people living here have remained isolated since the 19th Century and continue with their lively cultural way of living. Three and a half years ago a road was build through the Goso State Forest and the first long drop toilet ever was built in the village.

Beliefs

The spirituality of the ancient people and tribal beliefs are interwoven with their everyday life. Sangoma are the traditional healers who use trance dance to connect with the wisdom of the ancestors and receive messages from beyond.

Traditions

Village life is steeped in tradition. An example of this is: when the man (head of a household) of the house dies he is buried in his house. His family will neither use his house nor restore it. Reason for this is the belief that the ancestor’s spirit is still lives there. The house remains empty and after years the structure, built from natural materials, will collapse.

Food

The village people live from the land. They grow a total of 5 vegetables: pumpkin, cabbage, mielies, sweet potato and dumbi.

Energy

There is no electricity in the village, one of the few villages left without. There is no light pollution, and the village hopes to go the route of solar panels to preserve the natural environment. The water supply comes from spring water in the summer rainy season and in winter they collect water from the Magwa River which is boiled to sanitize for drinking.
